About This Piano
The Model I was Steinway’s largest upright — an “Upright Grand” with a soundboard and string length in the class of a parlor grand, built for homes and studios that want grand tone without a grand footprint. This 1899 example wears a refinished satin ebony case with the classic Grecian Doric columns and intricate paneling of the period.
When this Model I left Steinway’s New York factory in 1899, William McKinley was President of the United States. That year the Philippine–American War began, Mount Rainier became a national park, and the Bronx Zoo opened its gates in New York. Bayer received its patent for aspirin, and Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag was registered for copyright as ragtime swept the country. In the concert hall, Elgar’s Enigma Variations premiered in London and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 in Helsinki.
