Steinway Royal Appointments Soundboard Decal, 1913 Model M
The soundboard decal lists Steinway’s royal appointments, including King George V, Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II.
About This Piano
Built in New York in 1913, this Steinway Model M is the 5’7″ grand Steinway has long called the perfect home piano: big enough for a full, singing tone, compact enough for a living room.
When this Model M left Steinway’s New York factory in 1913, the royal appointments on its soundboard decal (Kaiser Wilhelm II, King George V, Tsar Nicholas II) read like a guest list of a vanishing age. That May, the three cousins gathered in Berlin for the wedding of the Kaiser’s only daughter, one of the last great royal occasions before the war that would divide them.
At home, Woodrow Wilson took office in March. A month later, he pressed a button in Washington that lit up New York’s new Woolworth Building, then the tallest in the world. Grand Central Terminal opened, Henry Ford set his first moving assembly line in motion, and the New York World printed the first crossword puzzle. In music, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring stunned Paris, Rachmaninoff wrote his Second Piano Sonata, and Debussy’s second book of Préludes was heard for the first time.
The mahogany case has been beautifully refinished in a hand-rubbed lacquer finish, and the restoration is being completed in our Boulder workshop by Registered Piano Technician Trevor Nelson.
